Today’s Job Advice

Be ready to answer this interview question:

What was the most frustrating or difficult experience you had in your last job and how did you deal with it?

Its a terrible question and there is no “right” answer, but interviewers ask it all the time. If you have an event in mind before the interview, you’ll have a better chance at coming out looking OK. Look for an event that you feel like you dealt with well.

Today’s Job Advice

Before you go into a job interview, draw up a list of questions that you would like to ask your interviewer. You might, for example, want to ask about the organization, the work environment, the tools and equipment, the day to day tasks, and the long term goals of the company. Having questions for your interviewer shows that you are interested in the job and that you are engaged in the interview.

Today’s Job Advice

Take any reasonable opportunity to get your name in print. The more your name is out there, and the more samples you have, the greater your chance of landing a good writing job. This includes blogs, newsletters, local publications and any other legitimate opportunity you can find to showcase your skills. No matter where you write though, make sure your name is attached. As a job seeker, your writing is as much for publicity as for any other purpose.

Unless the interviewer brings it up, wait until you have an offer to discuss salary and benefits. Try to get them to tell you the salary range before you commit to a number.

Today’s Job Advice

Send your resume to employment agencies. Employment agencies do not charge the job seeker (a few do, but don’t ever use them). Instead they get a fee from an employer if they place the right person with them. It is in these agencies’ interests to find the best possible person for the position, but it is basic human behavior to go with what you know before you go with what you don’t know. That means an agency will contact the people whose resumes they already have before they go out and search the job sites.
